Pacific Power Foundation helping feed our children
More than 30,000 lunches have been served to kids in Siskiyou County over the past seven years through the U.S.D.A. Summer Food Program, which is administered by Great Northern Services. The program is supported through the generosity of the Pacific Power Foundation, which is once again playing a big part in that service to our community’s youngest members in the coming summer months. The foundation recently awarded Great Northern Services a $4,000 grant to help maintain the Summer Food program and provide additional healthy food to the menu. “Hunger is an issue in our community year-round and has been made worse in the past couple of years by the pandemic,” said Marie-Josée Wells, Great Northern Services executive director. “Summer break ...

CARES Act funds Energy Assistance in Siskiyou County
(as published in the Mt. Shasta Area Newspapers on 8/5/2020) Local non-profit Great Northern Services (GNS) is receiving additional funding for their Energy Assistance program through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Operating under the umbrella and organized by the Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services (OES), the Task Force uses existing distribution networks and the wide collaboration of organizations and volunteers as well as new technology to get boxes of food delivered to residents who request them. “The willingness of the food banks, resource centers and other organizations to be part of the effort to deliver food to those who need it has exceeded my wildest expectations,” ...

For more than 20 years, community volunteer has raised funds for Meals on Wheels
A Mount Shasta resident since the winter of 1993, Dawn Fazende founded the Mt. Shasta Meals on Wheels Auxiliary in 2010. She’s also the organizer of Wesak, and annual spiritual festival that takes place in Mount Shasta. She first became involved with the Wesak Festival working with its founder, Dr. Joshua David Stone. When Stone passed away in 2005, she assumed the role of organizer and began donating the festival’s proceeds to the south county homebound meal delivery group. In July of 2019, Great Northern Services assumed administration of the Senior Nutrition Program, which feeds seniors a healthy meal for lunch several days a week at a nominal cost. For those who are able to get out and about, seniors ...
