Right now, the federal government is seriously considering budget cuts that would eliminate or drastically reduce funding for essential programs serving Siskiyou County, including LIHEAP’s Energy Assistance and Weatherization programs, Meals on Wheels, CSFP senior food boxes, and CDBG-funded community services, programs, and projects. These are not luxury services, they are lifelines for thousands of seniors, families, and individuals in our rural communities.
Great Northern Services has sent an appeal to elected officials, and your voice matters too. We are asking our supporters to join us in urging lawmakers to protect these programs.
Below is a sample letter you can personalize and send to your representatives. A few minutes of your time could help preserve meals, heat, housing, and economic stability for our most vulnerable neighbors and the local economy that supports us all.
Thank you!
Dear [Representative/Senator’s Name],
I am writing to express deep concern about proposed federal budget cuts that threaten essential services in Siskiyou County. If these cuts move forward, hundreds of seniors could lose their daily meals, families may go without heat next winter, food insecurity will deepen, and critical home repairs that keep vulnerable people safe may be halted.
Programs like LIHEAP’s Energy Assistance and Weatherization, CSFP senior food boxes, TEFAP emergency food, Meals on Wheels, and CDBG grants are not extras, they are how people in this rural region meet their basic needs. There are no other services ready to fill the gap if these are taken away.
These programs also keep an average of $2.8 million circulating in our local economy each year through the purchase of food, supplies, materials, and services. Cutting them would not only harm individuals and families, it would destabilize the entire region. While some say these proposed legislative and budgetary changes will help fund tax breaks, those breaks do not benefit the people who use these services. Considered in total, households in the lowest income group stand to lose up to $1,500 in resources each year.
I urge you to oppose these cuts and stand up for rural communities like mine. These programs provide critical support—please protect them.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
