(as announced in the Mt. Shasta Area Newspapers on Wednesday, November 14, 2018)

Mount Shasta’s annual 5k Reindeer Walk/Run is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23rd starting at Studio B, located at 321 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in downtown Mount Shasta.

Registration is $15 per person and can be done at Studio B ahead of time or on the day of the race. Kids under 12 can participate for free and the event is dog-friendly. Santa and his sleigh will be on hand and prizes will be given for best ugly Christmas sweaters or holiday costumes.

Event organizer Brenda Hall, owner of Studio B, has pledged a portion of the upcoming walk/run proceeds to help feed children in Siskiyou County through Great Northern Services’ “Fill their plates” campaign.

The campaign supports Great Northern Services’ Summer Lunch program, providing free meals to kids while school food programs are not available. “The number of kids in Siskiyou County who don’t always have enough food is incredibly high,” reports Nichole McCown, Public Relations and Fundraising Manager at Great Northern Services, “38.1% of our community’s children are considered food insecure. Caring businesses and individuals like Studio B, Brenda Hall, and all the participants in the Reindeer Walk/Run are filling the plates of local children.”

“I’ve gone to the Reindeer Walk/Run for the last three years,” says Marie-Josée Wells, Executive Director at Great Northern Services, “It’s a very fun and festive event full of good community spirit—and the outfits are fantastic.”

“People wear such wonderful costumes—one lady wore a Christmas tree on her head and we had three snowmen come from Yreka—but the best part of the event is the children,” emphasizes Hall, “The whole family can come participate, Santa will be handing out candy canes, and everyone is helping to make sure no kids go hungry.”

Community members are also invited to donate to the “Fill their plates” campaign by going online to www.northstategives.org/GNS. Donations can be scheduled ahead of time or made on Giving Tuesday (November 27th) until 8 p.m.  North State Giving Tuesday is powered by Shasta Regional Community Foundation, with sponsorship provided by Redding Bank of Commerce.
